Gelato can change lives as well as menus. At SIGEP World 2026 the partners behind Gelato and pastry for solidarity reported on a project that began in 2012. So far it has led to 13 gelato and pastry businesses in seven countries: Italy, Haiti, Brazil, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt and Mozambique.
How the project works
The initiative is run by the Bruto and Poerio Carpigiani Foundation with NGOs and community partners. Local organisations select participants, who then receive professional gelato and pastry training. Each new business is backed by a proper business plan, so staff and owners can enter, or re-enter, the workforce with a real enterprise behind them.
Recent highlights include the “WorkAbility” training programs for women in Jordan and continued work on the Cremedoce de Fronteira project in Mozambique. New connections were also made for possible projects in Congo, Tanzania and India.
The lesson for any new gelato business
The project’s formula of solid training, the right equipment and a realistic business plan is the same one that works for a new shop in Australia. Our gelato courses and business packages are built around those three things.
